Tom Bell is a sculptor currently based in London, UK. Recognized for the organic elegance of his sculpture and works on paper, his work is held in private and public collections around the world, including the Museo Nacional Centre de Arte Reina Sofia (Spain), the National Gallery of South Australia, and the Kunsthalle Hamburg (Germany). In 2000, he was a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.

Hair Sketches” combines the eternalized book form with anonymous locks of hair as abstract portraits. Hair is literally a form of DNA for an individual and collectively suggests a cultural identity. The formations of black locks of hair sealed on each page assume a portrait of an individual associated with Eastern cultures and tradition. Having spent much time in southwest China, it is the artist’s intent to channel the energy of Eastern forms and meaning isolated in each lock of hair and memorialize the identities of unknown people and cultures in this book. This work is embodies the organic elegance that characterizes Tom Bell’s’ sculptures and works on paper.

Artist Statement: Hair is a universal and virtually indestructible link between all people. There is something exceptionally powerful in a lock of hair. A symbol of virility and courage, it appears in all cultures and traditions. As an ancient amulet, in the heirlooms of ancestors, in precious secret memory, As the spirit of beauty.
