Qing Qing was born in 1953 in Beijing. She is a mixed media artist and recognized as one of the earliest female pioneers of experimental art in China. She is a self-taught artist who drove tractors in the countryside, practiced Chinese traditional medicine, owned a restaurant and worked as a professional in Austria before devoting her interests to art over twenty years ago. Her ready-made object installations, performance projects, and her signature hand-woven silk and hemp clothing works garner much regard as a female artist, but also as one of the few experimental avant-garde artists of her generation. She establishes a powerful individual style through her textile language that pioneered a significant artistic language of spiritual intuition. Her works are included in international private collections and have been collected by the National Art Museum of China and the New Museum (New York).

Book City is a literal sculptural interpretation of a book, filled with imagination and wonder. A wooden book shaped box opens to reveal a miniature landscape of tiny treasures and oddities. Surreal to say the least, the dreamscape represents desire, fear and a dark subconscious. Atypical of Qing Qing’s’ signature style of delicately woven textiles, this sentimental diorama unveils a playful naivete of spiritual intuition.
Artist Statement:
Sometimes I imagine a tale of a city, one that is never finished, one that is forever unread. But there are always people telling such tales and eternalizing the memory in books, such things will always remain. In their tiny form, bearing the weight and vestiges of an entire city’’s past, they becoming another era of history…This is the magic of the book, its power.
