Out or Diao Dui is an informal Beijing artist collective composed of the artists Chen Xinpeng, Dong Jing, Liang Shuo, Shao Kang, Wang Guangle, Zhou Yi, and Zhang Zhaohong. The group activities embrace an attitude of self-directed recreation and leisure, which includes but is not limited the field of visual art. Past projects have included a large-scale mural painting covering the interior of Arrow Factory in Beijing and a road trip to Chengdu.

Small Death is a performance by OUT, composed of seven friends and artists who visited 23 temples around Beijing during the spring and summer of 2011 and diligently took two hour naps at each. The resulting record of their endeavors is a 24 book series of photos and images of ink paintings documenting the humorous, random, serendipitous adventures of friends enacting a favorite Beijing summer pastime. As exemplified by the groups previous artistic adventures together, the project emulates the theme of渣意 zha-yi a fictitious word that is a vague compound of dregs+significance. The seemingly casual and random actions are significant in their insignificance. The apparent contradictions of the OUT collective are consistent in both their actions and publication, where hundreds of images and captions follows a free flow, stream of consciousness, film-reel layout. The perceived discord and disorganization of the groups efforts and presentation is undermined by the groups’ success in completing their collaboration and disseminating their humorous adventures.
Statement: We purposely enter a stage of imperception at secluded places, in
addition; we were looking for渣意 zha-yi(a word created by OUT). The meaning of zha-yi is not indisputable. Liang Shuo thinks that渣意 is the result of disorganized collaboration. Chen Xinpeng thinks that 渣意 is to do something with good intention but inadequate knowledge. Zhou Yi thinks that渣意is Liang Shuos’ hallucination. The main purpose of making this book is to popularize睡庙 napping in temples].
