Impurities is an artfully precise transcription of an English- Chinese dictionary page for the letter ‘G’ painted on natural paper. This work is reminiscent of the habit of napkin drawings. Using a non- archival, disposable material to faithfully render the illustrations and text of the original publication, Liu Ren makes a strong statement for the ephemeral nature of his own craft. The steady fine line drawings of ‘Glassware’ echo a sense of fragility for cherished things, a philosophy that the artist lives by. His work, as art, becomes merely a record of the passage of time, and his skill, as an artist, is a gift.

Artist Statement:

“I wish I could bond my life and my art creation completely in a single expression. On one hand, I am experiencing my life, and on the other, I am narrating my life. The way art helps me is in that I can, in the name of art, serendipitously encounter others’ experiences through my personal expression. It makes me feel like a spectator at a game, but at the same time, I am in the game.”
