Huang Min was born in Sichuan in 1975. She graduated from the oil painting department at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1998 and received her MA in 2006 at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing. She has exhibited extensively between China and Germany. She currently lives and works in Beijing.

Album Painting of Figures represents Huang Min’s earliest painting explorations of figures, landscapes and still lives that form the foundation for her further explorations in oil painting and ceramic medium. Using found albums near her studio, they became habitual sketchbooks for daily drawings of everyday life. Her paintings attempt to capture China caught in the gap of tradition and contemporary life. As a child, she developed an appreciation for traditional ink, studying calligraphy and landscape painting beside her grandfather. Her current portraits and sketches, especially watercolors on paper, are particularly expressive of people caught in moments of daily life against the backdrop of a rich cultural tradition.

Artist Statement:

册页是一种非常囿于书房的、文人式的、适合于案头把玩的中国传统艺术载体, 多以表现花鸟鱼虫,山水、 书法等为主。

在画的过程中我发现那些任意搭配起来的人物、山水等等,产生出一种荒诞、虚幻的现实感。这种感受恰恰 与我所理解的中国当下社会的某种现实生存状态相吻合。于是,我将这种平时的训练一直持续下来,并将其作为一种 独立的、主动的创作表达。

The album is the most common book form, signifies the scholar as it is suited for the scholar table among other objects of the scholar studio.
