“Contemporary art’ series is a full scale facsimile of pages from the Chinese-language edition of the History of Contemporary ([Western]) Art freehanded in pencil on paper. The artist has fashioned a faithful copy of the book, word for word, keeping faithful to the font and placement of all text. Images are omitted for viewers to focus on the content and/or the painstaking effort of each hand drawn character, hinting at the labor involved to produce a facsimile of a mass-manufactured medium. Consistent with the systematic and repetitive systems of his artistic practice, Hong Hao has not created an art book, rather, his work challenges our use of language and our belief in books.
